I’ve always thought it was a cool idea to be able to grow your own food. I did some looking around and decided that the Mittleider gardening method would be fairly easy while being pretty successful. I spent a lot of time researching, watching videos, and emailing with other gardeners. After I had a good idea of what I wanted to do, my wife and I sprung into action.
I started off building the base with some steaks on the inside just to secure it to the ground a little better in case the mower hit it.
Because I wanted some sort of covering in case of rain, I went ahead and built my T frames and sunk them in the ground at a depth of 2 feet. I didn’t want to concrete them in because I didn’t want to have to pull them out later. This seems to have worked pretty well so far.
I got the bracing built between the T frames and attached 45 degree elbows for pvc pipe along the inside of each brace. Then I was able to put the pvc in from side to side to create a smooth rounded top for my plastic sheeting.
The trickiest part was getting this green house plastic up and over the garden. My wife and I almost gave up just as a gust of wind came by and grabbed the plastic like a kite. We gracefully walked it over and secured it with clamps until we were able to permanently secure it. We used an over and under design to lock the plastic into place with two 90 degree turns and the clamping force of the bottom board on both of those surfaces. This seems to have been a really good solution as we have had a lot of storms and am still showing no sign of failure. After all sides were secure, we used a razor to cut off the excess plastic and make a clean edge.
This is my first time gardening, and it’s been pretty rewarding. We had some bad luck with our squash/zucchini because of vine bores. We also lost our cucumber to white powder mildew from all the rain. However, we were able to grow a lot of cucumbers before we lost them, and if we didn’t have the covering, I’m sure we would have lost everything. We have had so much rain this year it was incredible. Here’s some pictures of how things have looked while growing.
So what else do you do with all these vegetables when they are growing this fast? Can them! I’ve never canned food before this year and it was so much fun. Being able to seal in your food and store it for months/years is amazing to me. Here’s what some of our pickles look like.
